Pregnancy

There has been an huge increase in the number of young Irish girls who become pregnant and are not ready to. We n ow have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the EU and rising. There are two simple solutions to this: NO SEX! or SAFE SEX!

If things seem bad, don't panic!................
If you suspect you might be pregnant then you should take a test immediately. Test kits are available from pharmacies or doctors. You won't know for sure until you take a test.

If you are pregnant then it's important you don't panic. Pregnancy brings many changes, challenges and decisions, but with support and advice you will get through it! Talk to a close friend, family member or one of the many support organisations who can offer you free and confidential advice. It might seem like a 'crisis' now but in time things will become clearer. Remember you're not the first and you won't be the last. Mistakes happen but having the courage to face up to them and make the most is a unique challenge.

Signs that you might be pregnant.........
Missed Period/s This is the most reliable natural indicator but missed period/s doesn't always mean your pregnant.
Morning sickness This can come at any time -day or night- and be vomitting or just a queasy feeling.
Headaches Pregnancy can bring headaches but they can also be caused by a number of factors
Tender breasts This is one sign of pregnancy
Vaginal discharge Vaginal discharge which isn't sore or itchy
Bloating Not everyone gets bigger right away. Bloating might be caused by your period on its way.
If in doubt............get checked out!

Remember................

  • If you are pregnant don't panic! It's a major time in your life, but you will cope.
  • There are several organisations that aim to support women who are pregnant
  • When you become a mother or father it will be a challenging time for you, but help is available
  • Fathers matter and have a right to a say! In an ideal situation, the father will be around to be supportive and loving to the mother and baby but if, for whatever reason, this isn't the case single parents can cope
  • Both parents have responsibilities towards the baby
  • There are organisations such as Cherish who aim to help, advise and support single parents
  • Having a baby will make a massive impact on your life - mentally, socially, financially and for your future. Often it will appear all negative, but turn out to be an amazing and positive experience
